WORK EXPERIENCE
1990 - Mechanical CAD Consulting Company Indianapolis, IN President
Involved in the entire range of operations including software development, customer support, system administration, marketing, sales, employee relations and financial management. Investigated customer requirements, created solution architecture considering available tools, implemented solution. Solutions primarily include Pro/ENGINEER solid modeling mechanical computer aided design (CAD) and/or product data management (PDM) products.
Developed, sold, and supported interface (Opti*Pro) from Pro/ENGINEER to sheet metal part manufacturing software. Program (1) extends user interface, (2) extracts geometry, feature, and attribute information from a 3D solid model, and (3) creates a 2D IGES file containing geometry and attributes. Software written with Pro/DEVELOP and Pro/TOOLKIT. A customer stated that a task which previously to 24 hours can now be completed in 10 minutes. Created similar program to extract geometry from an Autodesk Inventor model into a DWG file using Inventor C++ API and Open Design Alliance API.
Developed interfaces from Pro/ENGINEER to other systems for end user customers and software vendors. Built strategic relationships with several software companies. Software developed using C, C++, Pro/TOOLKIT, Pro/INTRALINK Toolkit and open source (e.g. cURL, zlib). Specified hardware and software to be used in product development. Savings on one project were $260M on an investment of $40M.
Designed and modeled solid, plastic, and sheet metal parts using Pro/ENGINEER. Design automation accomplished with Pro/PROGRAM. Used Pro/PDM and Pro/INTRALINK to manage design data.
Participated in national Pro/ENGINEER activities. Certified Engineering Provider (CEP) for software development PTC Partner Advantage Program Member. Member of PTC/User Customization Technical Committee, and user groups. Wrote one book and many magazine articles. Member board of advisers for Pro/E: The Magazine, a trade publication. Exhibited at several national user group meetings of more than 1000 users.
Trained company and client employees with instructor led classes and one-on-one mentoring. Provided user support. Installed and configured software.
2005 – Apr-Oct Indy Robot Racing Carmel, IN Team Member
Reported to Team Manager. Indy Robot Racing developed an autonomous vehicle for the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge Race. I supervised a team of three volunteers that developed software for obstacle detection using LIDAR sensors. LIDAR was configured to transmit 181 points 75 times per second at 500kb into Windows 2000 computer.
1985 - 1989 Thomson Consumer Electronics Indianapolis, IN Manager, Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems
Reported to Managers of Manufacturing Technology Center, Technology Information Systems, and Equipment Development. Managed technical group (6-10 people) responsible for design and implementation of software to support factory floor operations in five plants. Responsible for budget and project schedules. Major system performed real-time factory data collection, analysis and reporting.
In the Bloomington, IN television final assembly plant a new automated assembly line was implemented. In support, we obtained a $1MM appropriation. Supervised software development and equipment installation. System collected data from custom user input terminals and automatic test equipment. Reduced custom computer-controlled machine cycle time 15% by utilizing optimization and operational monitoring. Estimated annual savings exceeded $6MM.
A new high-voltage transformer and manufacturing line was developed in the Indianapolis plant for production in Torreon, Mexico. Using our development computer, we implemented a real-time factory feedback system. Sold system concept to Torreon plant manager. Yield was increased from a maximum of 88% to a minimum of 98%.
1980 - 1985 RCA Consumer Electronics Division Indianapolis, IN Senior Member, Engineering Staff
Reported to Manager, Engineering Systems. In support of printed circuit board CAD, determined requirements, formulated plans, selected equipment, and obtained funding.
Supervised CAD/CAM team of three that designed and implemented improved circuit board layout software. Software showed space required by automatic component insertion equipment for discrete components considering insertion order. Trained printed circuit board designers. Reduced printed circuit board design time by 10%.
Designed, implemented and supervised development of a program that converted printed circuit board CAD database into photoplotter commands. Program reduced generation and plotting times.
1978 - 1980 RCA Laboratories Somerville, NJ Member Technical Staff, Solid State Technology Center
Team implemented a shop floor data collection system used in three Solid State Division plants. Responsible for enhancement and maintenance of mini-computer based network DBMS and training of application programmers. Determined performance bottlenecks in DBMS and revised software to eliminate problems. Overall performance increased by 10% with some individual functions improved by a factor of 10.
1973 - 1978 RCA Automated Systems Division Washington, DC Member Technical Staff
Responsible for daily operation of intelligence data analysis demonstration office in the Pentagon. Demonstrated system capabilities to all levels of customer personnel. Updated system daily with intelligence data and installed new software. Implemented programs to analyze data in a network of eight PDP-11/45 computers.
1971 – 1973 RCA Automated Systems Division Burlington, MA Associate Member Technical Staff
Implemented software to analyze and graphically display historical intelligence data. Developed communications between IBM 1130 (EBCDIC, hex) mini-computer and IMLAC PDS-1 (ASCII, octal) vector display. Implemented program to utilize magnetic tape on PDP-11/45 mini-computer using an undocumented device driver.
