Chemicals business is divided into four main areas:
Fire Suppression – Clean, non-toxic and environmentally-friendly gases used to protect high value assets in enclosed spaces.
Refrigerants – Environmentally friendly (non-CFC) gases for the next generation of dwelling and military cooling applications.
Monomers – Specialty monomers that are used in critical performance elastomers and plastics.
Specialties for pharmaceutical, agricultural and electronic industries – Fluorine containing intermediates used to create bio-active materials and in electronics fabrication.


PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

Technology Manager (7/2005 - Present)

Roles/Responsibility: Responsible for the day-to-day R&D operations for the business. Report through VP of technology for growth and emerging businesses with indirect report to the GM of fluorine business.

• Assign and coordinate all activities of the R&D team.
• Report results and project(s) status to technical and business upper management in verbal and written form.
• Set activities, timetables and milestones for project completion.
• Participate in strategic planning for future products and businesses with commercial team.
• Prioritize, support, and coordinate all intellectual property initiatives, working closely with internal and external IP council and technology team.
• Manage and collaborate with all outside technical resources, both contractual and academic.
• Engage in the conceptualization and development of new chemical and engineering technologies to drive new business opportunities.
• Provide technical support to new and existing customers.
• Provide hands-on support for new technology commercialization including plant start-up or out-sourcing.

Direct reports: 5 chemists.

External Resources/Collaborations: 2 academic, sponsored post-doctoral students for corporate directed research; 1 contract synthesis lab, year round.


Technology Manager (9/2002 - 7/2005)

Business same as described above.

Roles/Responsibilities: Same as above except reported through the business function directly, i.e., the VP/GM of the fluorine business.

Indirect Reports: 1 Shift Manager, 8 Operators
Facilities: Laboratories; Experimental Station (consisting of a lab, pilot pant and applications lab).
External Resources/Collaborations: Academic, 2 sponsored post-doctoral students for corporate directed research; 3 sponsored environmental research work; 2 contract synthesis labs, 1, year round, other spot use; 3 contract testing labs for environmental and toxicological work; 2 consultants.

Group Leader (1/2002 - 9/2002)

Roles/Responsibilities: Coordinated and directed all R&D activity at the laboratory site and joint projects with the pilot plant. Reported to the director of technology. Many of the same responsibilities listed above.

Senior Research Chemist (5/1999 - 1/2002)

Reported in to General Manager and later director of technology

Roles/Responsibilities: Lead scientist for the development and implementation of new materials and chemical processes. Worked closely with other team members and coordinated with other technical groups. Responsible for the safe operation of the lab(s) and equipment assigned our team. Hands-on support for all commercial start-up of new processes and support for on-going operations.

Research Chemist II (2/1998 - 5/1999)

Reported in to General Manager Fluorine Chemicals

Roles/Responsibilities: Responsible for the supervision of all lab activities at the R&D site. Worked with new products/process team to identify potential new business opportunities. Formulated and designed strategies to accomplish synthetic or process goals from general project mandates. Performed, supervised, evaluated, and documented laboratory experiments. Worked with both engineers and marketing team members in order to implement projects. Wrote and participated in the filing of patent applications.

Research Chemist (6/1992 - 2/1998)

Reported in to General Manager

Roles/Responsibilities: Same as above for Senior Research Chemist except work full-time as bench chemist.
