Consultant, Business Strategy Recruited by and reporting to the CEO on a full-time basis to identify new business opportunities, merger and acquisition opportunities, and providing management guidance for strategic product groups.
Public Company • 1994-2007 Provider of software & research products & services to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and other life science organizations to aid in the discovery of new therapeutics; $65M annual revenue at peak.
President & CEO Reported to Board of Directors, and led all corporate strategic planning and business development. Administered $20M capital and $35M operating budgets. Supervised 7 Senior VPs. Directly managed international operations including subsidiaries in England, France, Germany and distributors in the Pacific Rim. Evaluated new product strategies and concepts and investment opportunities. Drove efforts to expand market share and increase bottom line. During this same period, Company’s market capitalization grew from less than $15M to more than $330M. • Initiated joint venture in 1995 to design and sell chemical collections to the pharmaceutical industry; efforts generated $18M in revenue in 2 years. • Led $1.5M founding investment in Biotechnology Company that returned $17M within 6 years. • Invested $0.4M founding capital in BioTools Company with return of $1M in two years. • Spearheaded the acquisition of a UK-based chemistry company that generated new business, including a $90M, 4-year contract with a major international pharmaceutical company for the development of novel chemicals. • Secured $14M service contract with Bayer Pharmaceuticals by initiating collaboration with a bio tool provider to produce leading-edge pharmaceutical research information systems. • Established relationship with Accenture that ultimately resulted in a joint offering and collaborative marketing between the Company and Accenture; The Company subsequently entered software development projects with Bristol-Myers Squibb (~$5M), Merck (~$2M), Schering AG (~$5M), and Wyeth (~$6M) between 2000 and 2006. • Recruited and assembled a Board of Directors subsequent to the Company’s spin-out as an independent public company in 1994; board was comprised of financial experts, a Nobel-prizewinning scientist, and the principal scientific discoverer of Merck's blockbuster drugs Mevacor® and Zocor®. • Led search in 2006 for strategic alternatives that resulted in sale of Company's business ops in 2007.
Formal Recognition: • Honored with Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for science and technology in the St. Louis region on behalf of the Company in 2002.
Private Company, Subsidiary of Computer Company • 1987-1994 Acquired by Computer Company in 1987, a pioneer in high-performance graphics and computing; established as an independent subsidiary; $1M annual revenue in 1987.
President Reported to CEO of Computer Company, and assumed P&L accountability for Subsidiary. Oversaw all financial, sales & marketing, and R&D operations. Led business-critical software development initiatives. Established European operations for sales and support in England, France, Germany and engaged and managed Pacific Rim distributor and support network. Played integral role in parent company executive management and maintained all key customer and collaborative relationships. Networked with industry leaders, and delivered presentations at major conferences.
Key Contributions: • Grew revenue from $1M to $20M by investing in new technologies and scientific techniques that established the Subsidiary as a leader in an extremely competitive marketplace. • Initiated and executed the acquisition of a NY-based software company; restructured and integrated company to enable new capabilities that boosted revenue 25% and significantly expanded customer base. • Established a collaborative commercial consortium to fund the development of an innovative database searching technology; orchestrated academic collaborations to produce leading-edge scientific software. • Recruited company’s first experienced commercial sales manager, a sales executive from Digital Equipment Corporation, who transformed the organization from a group of technical representatives to a high-performance, professional sales operation. • Recommended the spinout of Subsidiary as an independent public company. CAREER NOTE: Background includes prior roles as Head of Software R&D for Subsidiary prior to acquisition by Computer Company. (Developed the initial product architecture that serves as the foundation of all the Company's software) and as Research Scientist for a Major University's Medical School & Engineering School (Developed operating system, utilities, and scientific software that were integral part of the start-up of the Company.)
