We have been retained by MemorialCare Health System to conduct their search for a CMO for Long Beach Memorial Medical Center (LBMMC), the flagship hospital of the MemorialCare Health System. This is an outstanding opportunity to be an integral member of a dynamic organization. This position is based in Long Beach, California.

About the position:

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is responsible for providing strong, effective and inspired medical leadership for physicians of the hospital to ensure that the highest level of quality medical care is provided to patients in a cost effective and efficient manner. Reporting to the CEO, the CMO is an integral member of the Senior Leadership team. Via work with carelines, medical directors, medical staff, patient care services and administration, the CMO is responsible for ongoing planning, development, implementation and continuous improvement of the programs and services involving and/or provided by the medical staff. The CMO facilitates the Medical Executive Committee and its functions and represents the best interests of patients and their families, physicians and the hospital. The CMO participates in system-wide initiatives as requested. He/she will need to balance Hospital Administration and Medical Staff goals, building trust and leading with credibility and influence.

Essential functions will include:

" Leads the LBMMC medical staff recruitment and development initiatives.
" Promotes effective communication among medical staff, senior leadership, and governance.
" Participates in strategic planning at the senior executive level.
" Promotes the development of best practices as a member of the Memorial Care Physician Society; responsible for the medical components of LBMMC quality management.
" Evaluates and improves patient, family and physician satisfaction.
" Assists medical staff leaders to perform their functions as described in the medical staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations.
" Promotes advocacy and networking by participating in HASC, CMA, and CHA.
" Promotes strong linkages with community organizations.
" Works closely with the medical staff in the maintenance of the Vanderbilt Model and peer review process.

" Oversees LBMMC physician credentialing and privileging process.
" Oversees physician aspects of maintenance and/or acquisition of accreditation by regulatory agencies (e.g., DHS, JCAHO, CCS).
" Functions as primary contact to resolve physician medical care issues and grievances.
" Develops strategy for the growth of Academic affiliations and research partnerships with UCI, UCLA and others.
" Attends and participates in Performance Improvement Council (as LB Chair), Memorial Care Physician Society Board (as LB CMO) and Patient Safety Committee meetings.
" Participates as voting member of MECs and other medical staff committees as defined in medical staff bylaws.
" Participates in Senior Leadership Council meetings and other administrative meetings as appointed by CEO.
" Participates as a voting member of the Quality Committee and as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors of LBMMC.

Key Goals:

" Collaborate with Medical Foundation to ensure timely credentialing/privileging for hospital based physicians.
" Launch PARS (Patient Advocacy Reporting System) component of Vanderbilt Model.
" Incorporate Culture of Safety in physician onboarding curriculum.

Required Education and Experience:

Education & License:
" MD/DO with current license by California Medical Board.
" 3-5 years clinical practice including in patient care.
" Board Certified in at least one medical specialty; Internal Medicine preferred.

" Successful clinical practice experience.
" Medical leadership position such as medical staff department chair and/or Chief of Staff.
" Medical business exposure as director of IPA, PPO, or medical group.
" Oversight responsibility such as a member of a Hospital Board of Directors.
" Experience in reporting at Board Level preferred.
" Experience working in California is highly preferred.

" Familiarity with physician management principles.
" Demonstrated ability for team building and negotiation.
" Familiarity with data analysis and statistical evaluation.
" Experience with Quality Improvement initiatives.
" Knowledge of LEAN preferred.
