Holtzbrinck is a $500 million U.S. division of a $2.5 billion European publishing conglomerate. Imprints include St. Martin’s Press, Holt, Farrar, Straus & Giroux and a college text division. Report directly to COO. Senior member of a management team responsible for operations for accounting, finance, royalties, inventories and licensing income.
Accomplishments:
* Restructured Royalty Department, thus eliminating many redundancies which resulted in increased efficiencies in dealing with outside clients needs. Reengineered department by documentation, training, motivation and development. The results were a dramatic increase in morale and productivity with a reduced staff from 18 to 14.
* Responsible for the implementation of a new licensing income system to record and collect income.
* Developed accounting procedures and sub ledgers for assets in excess of $150 million.
* Improved asset management and cash forecasting by tracking contracts by paid and unpaid advances and develop standardized write-off procedures.
* Negotiated and implemented an accounting service agreement for distribution client.

Atlantic Recording Corp. is a manufacturer and distributor of recorded music. Reported to the SVP of Finance with a dotted line to the CFO. Responsibilities included all accounting, budgets and forecasts for royalties, audits and settlements, and accounts receivable. Staff of 22 responsible for over 13,000 quarterly royalty accountings.
Accomplishments: * Acting VP of Finance during an extended period while both the SVP and VP of Finance were on leave.
* Facilitated reorganization of accounting and financial reporting within division, providing enhanced analysis and controls, resulting in profitability increase of 10 percent.
* To lower administrative costs and improve workflow, reengineered and streamlined all departmental procedures across all staff levels. Reduced costs in excess of 20%, reduced headcounts, and motivated and rewarded staff.
* To collect missing income, developed and implemented an income tracking system that logged and tracked income. Within months collected in excess of $400K missing income.
* Designated project manager in developing system to pay on a track (subscription) basis new internet royalties. Result was industry benchmark of new system with the potential of additional income for company by selling proprietary information to competitors.
1991 - 1999 EMI MUSIC PUBLISHING Vice President - Catalogue Development and Royalty Accounting
EMI Music Publishing is the world leader in music publishing. This position reported directly to the CFO. During tenure the company doubled in revenue (over $700 million). Responsibilities included catalog acquisition negotiations, annual budgets, strategic planning, audit settlements, managing a staff of 28 with over 1,000,000 copyrights, accounting and reconciliations, and income tracking.
Accomplishments:
* Developed a system that automated and cross-collateralized foreign deals with domestic deals. Profitability increased over $1 million dollars annually and rendered timely accountings to clients. * To find missing foreign revenue, devised a tracking system to look for gaps and inconsistencies in foreign income for major contracts. Result: 10% increase in foreign revenue and savings on compliance audits.
* Designed and supervised worldwide consolidation of major music catalog. We met contractual obligations with increased revenue where competition and predecessor failed. * To improve our competitive position, successfully negotiated new deals. The outcome was increase in market share and revenues for remaining life of copyright of high profile songs.
