EXPERIENCE Global Materials Manufacturing Company - Research Division Research & Development Manager 2005-present As a manager of a large team of professional researchers in the central research division of a global manufacturing company I have led the creation of a new research program in composite materials through strategic planning and alignment, the identification and justification of new projects based upon technology and business opportunities, the direct management of a diverse staff and other tactical elements required to meet research and business milestones. As a technology leader at a global manufacturing company through a period of dramatic change I have studied and implemented approaches to creating an innovative environment that promotes creativity and teamwork combined with accountability for execution. -Led four inventions to successful product commercialization. -Led the development and implementation of a new strategy to transition from an obsolete technology platform in polymeric yarn modification to a new targeted platform in nano- to meso-scale composites. -Technical leader on the development of a business strategy and plan to create a new business with targeted revenue >$250M in 10 years -Led evaluation and successful negotiation of a license for a body of patents from a leading university. -Supervision, evaluation and personnel development of 8-10 professional researchers and 4-5 technicians including responsibility for budgetary management, new hire integration, safe work practices . -Led proposal preparation and submission successfully securing $1.5M in federal research funding as a subcontractor. -More than 20 patents application and 10 patents granted resulting from team leadership and invention. Research Physicist 2002-2005 In my role as a staff researcher I created a new laboratory to study the of structure of clarified polypropylene using polarized laser light scattering contributing to a fundamental understanding of the material system and the development of a next generation product for a $200M product line. National Institute of Standards and Technology 2000-2002 Surface and Microanalysis Division As a National Research Council Postdoctoral Associate I applied an amplified femtosecond laser system to the study of molecular order at polymer/ dielectric interfaces using Vibrationally Resonant Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy complemented by spectroscopic ellipsometry and infrared spectroscopy leading to 4 publications in peer reviewed journals and multiple conference presentations. EDUCATION Commitment to un-ending personal growth motivates a constant effort to learn new skills to advance my effectiveness as a leader of industrial research. I have capitalized on the resources of a global company to obtain business training through instruction and experience in IP strategy, financial assessment of new opportunities and new customer identification and engagement.
