DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES
Building Material Distributors, Inc.
Galt, CA

Our client, Building Material Distributors, Inc. (BMD) (www.bmdusa.com), is seeking a Director of Human Resources to join their executive management team. BMD was established in 1943, and is a global wholesale distributor and exporter of specialty private label and commodity line building materials. For over 60 years, BMD has been known for integrity, quality and unmatched service. BMD is a 100% employee-owned company, headquartered in Galt, California, with seven branch offices in California, Colorado and New Mexico.

Expected outcomes for this position within the first 12 months include:

1. By the end of the first 30 days of employment, to have identified and met with key stakeholders (including management, staff, standing committees, external advisors and consultants) for the purpose of establishing relationships, listening, and gaining an understanding of stakeholder roles, perspectives and issues.
2. By the end of the first 90 days of employment, to have assessed the department, its staff and establish department objectives to support BMD’s short and long-term objectives.
3. By the end of the first 120 days of employment, finalize and present to the President/CEO the business plan to support the Human Resource Department’s objectives and finalize a prioritized implementation plan.
4. By the end of the first year of employment, to have in place a corporate talent management plan that is aligned with business objectives. The talent management plan should include: identifying and developing organizational talent; incentive and compensation structures; and attraction and retention strategies.
5. By the end of the first year of employment, to have achieved a smooth transition into the organization, and to be seen as an effective business partner to the executive management team, and their respective departments and divisions.

The Director of Human Resources reports directly to the President/CEO, is a member of the executive management team, and supervisors a small staff of human resources professionals. Responsibilities include all functions that deal with the needs and activities of the organization’s people including: compensation and benefits, employee relations, recruiting and retention, employee development, HR systems, labor compliance, employee savings/investment plans, insurance programs and workplace safety.


We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate any combination of education, training and experience which would provide the knowledge and ability to successfully perform these duties and achieve these expected outcomes. Our client believes the following portrays the qualifications they seek: an advanced level understanding of comprehensive labor compliance and human resources generalist functions; seven plus years human resources generalist experience, including compensation and benefits, employee relations, recruiting and retention, employee development, human resource systems, employee savings/investment plans, workplace safety; five plus years at a senior, supervisorial or management level; experience in an employee-owned company/Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP) is highly desired; a four year degree in business, human resource management or a related field; a graduate degree is preferred. A PHR certification or SPHR certification is a plus.
