INDEPENDENT CONSULTANT 2006 to Present
Independent consultant working with several homeowner insurance companies and MGA’s on strategy, underwriting, product, marketing, claims and technology. Coordinating operations of various TPA’s for new virtual company assuming a large volume of business from a national carrier. Assisting a large MGA in developing an information and data strategy. Contracted by several investor groups to advise them on issues and strategies of creating new insurance companies to write residential business in Florida.
SPECIALTY HOMEOWNER SUBSIDIARY (Cooper City, FL) 2005 - 2006 Vice President – Personal Lines Underwriting, SE Division Coordinated strategy for conversion of American Superior homeowners business to new organization, including product, regulatory, marketing and operations. Converted $30,000,000 in premium profitably, and coordinated streamline of agency force, re-underwriting, and product management. Currently creating homeowners products for new additional new Florida entity.
AMERICAN SUPERIOR INSURANCE (Plantation, FL) 2003 - 2004 Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer Management of insurance operations including marketing, product management, underwriting, customer service, IT, and reinsurance for $45 million Florida homeowners insurer. Worked in tandem with the CEO to restructure all phases of this company. Expenses cut by over 30%, new system and service implementation, increased rates, and generated first seven months of profit in the company's seven year history. Surplus increased over 30%. Assumed the position as part of a turnaround attempt to save the company, which was succeeding until we were hit by four hurricanes our first season. Managed the wind down of operations in liquidation with the Florida Department of Rehabilitation and Liquidation.
GREAT AMERICAN INSURANCE GROUP (Cincinnati, OH) 2003 Business Systems Strategist - IT Services Internal consultant to various business divisions improving the performance of their technology, strategy and operations to better support their business objectives. Refocused and salvaged major trucking system development, evaluation and corrected strategy for Builders Risk system, and provided consulting to IT analysts on key strategic projects.
ALPHA FINANCIAL SERVICES CONSULTING, LLC (Cincinnati, OH)2002-2003 Partner – Insurance Practice Technology strategy development and implementation for insurance organizations in support of business objectives. Completed research and strategy for a national brokerage organization to define a new web platform for their agency distribution partners. Evaluation of agency automation for an expanding multi-location agency.
AMERICAN MODERN INSURANCE GROUP, INC. (Cincinnati, Ohio) 1997-2001 As Senior Vice President, I was asked to serve in a number of strategic roles at critical times, and was able to achieve objectives quickly and effectively, placing key people in positions before being asked to move to the next assignment. Changes implemented have been lasting and continue to have significant impact on company results.
Provided leadership in the development of a Logical Data Model for the future and managing the data transition from the legacy systems to a tier-based architecture. Developed data warehouse capabilities to significantly increase effectiveness of reporting using COGNOS Information Portal. Created the “Strategic Alliance” business channel that provides American Modern’s products and services to other insurance companies for their customers as a rapidly growing $16 million division Established relationships with key people in targeted companies, validated needs assessment of potential partners with American Modern as a viable solution. As Chief Information Officer of a 100 person, $20 million division, restored morale, completed Y2K preparations, ensured infrastructure integrity, and established accountability and control over system development. Led integration and alignment of our technology business strategies and set the foundation to the next generation (NextGen) vision initiative. Developed technology plan to support our business strategies and leverage investment in legacy systems while moving aggressively to new technology. Realigned division structure to separate support and applications development and create a Project Office.
Operating as Chief Knowledge Officer, established and staffed Marketing Research, Information Services, New Product Development, Marketing Communications, and Database Marketing. Strengthened effectiveness of Corporate Reinsurance and Actuarial. Created company website, Intranet, data warehouse with OLAP tools. Pioneered development of a “private label” approach to distribution and developed new programs for log homes and urban residences.
Originally recruited to re-build the product area managing $350 million in Mobile Home, RV, Classic Car, Non-standard Dwelling, and Homeowner products distributed through agency, point of sale, and lender distribution channels. Introduced structured methodology for pricing analysis and product changes. Upgraded systems, established channel/company strategy, initiated revisions of core products, and developed non-standard homeowner product.
MARKEL AMERICAN INSURANCE COMPANY (Richmond, Virginia) 1994-1997 Vice President - Property Created a new division for non-standard personal lines property products. Mobile Home, Dwelling Fire, and Homeowners products introduced in over 40 states. Establishment of agency and direct distribution channels, product development, customer service, underwriting, and data warehouse. Over $15 million in profitable premium written the first full year of operation.
BANKERS & SHIPPERS INSURANCE COMPANY (Burlington, NC) 1991-1994 Senior Product Manager - Property Product Manager for Mobile Home, Low Valued Dwelling, and Specialty Dwelling programs. Directed product development, pricing, underwriting, marketing and customer service for $13 million in direct premiums through general and independent agents. Drafted new policy forms, enhanced computer rating and issuance, introduced direct bill, created catastrophe exposure and actuarial loss management system, and formed customer service unit. Extended product lines from 12 to 33 states and produced over $2.0 million in profitable new business in 1993.

PERSONAL LINES PROFIT CENTER (New York) AVP - Worldwide Personal Lines Managed project for implementation and enhancement of A+PLUS front-end policy management system with implementation in the U.K., Puerto Rico, and SE Asia. Implemented strategic planning, underwriting, marketing, systems, staffing responsibility with specific emphasis on Europe, Latin America, and UK for worldwide portfolio of US$650 million in premium. SOUTHEAST ASIA DIVISION (Manila, Philippines)(1989-1991) Regional Vice President - Personal Lines and Director of Agencies Directed Personal Lines and Agency departments in nine countries for strategic planning, underwriting, marketing, and automation, increasing Personal Lines production from US$45 million to US$70 million and Agency production from US$60 million to US$90 million. Directed expansion of AIA Life into Personal Lines.
