Position Description

CLIENT OVERVIEW

Our client is a leading global insurance company with a strong track record of profitable growth and leading market positions in the segments it serves. It is a top ten US insurance firm, a Fortune 250 organization, and recognized as one of the “America’s Most Admired” firms with about $15 billion in revenues.

Their IT organization is centralized and organized by business unit and function. There has been a recent reorganization which included the establishment of a dedicated PMO function. There is an immediate need for a Vice President Claims IT PMO to join this top ten property casualty insurer reporting directly to the Corporate CIO. The position is located conveniently in an attractive New York City suburb.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

The VP Claims IT PMO is responsible for successfully managing and overseeing multiple complex projects that span across multiple programs within Claims IT. The key responsibilities include:
• Managing the overall PMO function for Claims IT providing leadership, governance and management control of the Claims IT PMO
• Participating in the strategic planning and implementation of major Claims IT strategies and initiatives
• Supporting the Global IT CIO with business-wide program analyses
Manage, encourage, and develop the PM team and ensure that Claims IT PM processes are adhered to and maintained
• Partnering with Global IT CIO to define and prioritize Claims IT portfolio of programs and projects providing the Global IT CIO with critical insight to develop the Claims IT strategic roadmap and monitor portfolio progress
• Serving as a lead project manager for complex and/or strategic programs and projects, collaborating with Claims IT, Corporate IT and other appropriate stakeholders to define their objectives and set up the project plan
• Providing oversight to the scoping, planning, execution and monitoring activities of the Program and Project Managers, and ensure the Claims IT project portfolio is on schedule and on budget
• Actively determining and managing the risk profile of the Claims IT project portfolio and take corrective action when necessary
• Overseeing Claims IT performance metrics and projections, and monitor key Claims IT program metrics such as cost, schedule and quality indicators
• Providing oversight to Claims IT demand and resource management regarding resource forecasts, mobility of resources, open Claims IT needs, and immediate resource demands
• Defining the overall Claims IT vendor management strategy at the program level, participate if necessary in vendor negotiation and contact development, and provide oversight to ongoing vendor management
• Providing oversight to define Claims IT project management methodologies and tools to ensure consistency and adherence to Project Management standards
• Regularly communicating with Claims IT Program Managers, Project Managers and IT Service Managers to stay current of the ongoing Claims IT workload
• Supporting the development and implementation of the Claims IT knowledge management process
• Participating in Claims IT and company-wide project management working groups and activities to stay current on the latest project management solutions and to ensure the proposed project management processes, tools and metrics are aligned to the current and future Corporate IT objectives
• Building and maintaining an in-depth understanding of business process and products across Claims and Claims IT , and establish strong working relationships with functional counterparts and vendors


QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:

The “ideal” VP Claims IT PMO will have the following qualifications and experience:
• Bachelor's Degree (required) or Master's Degree (preferred)
• 10-12 years of project management experience of complex program and projects
• Project Management Institute (PMI), Project Management or Professional (PMP) certification strongly desired
• Knowledge of CMM and Six Sigma methodologies and standards
• Excellent project management skills, including ability to execute and prioritize a number of tasks simultaneously, and experience managing cross-functional teams
• Proven financial management experience and an expert understanding of IT environments, technologies in relation to business needs
• Proven practical experience with analysis and/or support to Claims business processes
• Experience using enterprise project management application such as Clarity
• Experience in initiating, conducting and facilitating discussions with multiple stakeholders, and ability to translate the results and issues at hand to the business and to the IT teams
• Excellent communication skills, strong interpersonal and relationship management skills with excellent conflict resolution and negotiation skills
