The Database Service Manager is responsible for defining the strategy for our database technology platform and services and overseeing a team to plan, build and operate it. The goal is to ensure that company databases are managed excellently at appropriate risk levels (e.g. security, availability, recoverability, performance etc) to enable business tech groups to be more agile and focus on their core business problems and reduce systematic risks. We are looking for a senior leader who has the experience, conceptual intelligence and drive to define what is required to achieve this goal and implement that strategy. The Database Service Manager will interact with a wide array of stakeholders including application developers, business and technology heads and a broad user base from various departments across the company. To be successful in this role, the Database service manager will need to define, design and implement DB management best practices, architecture and organizational model; build and manage an organization that can scale to handle a large number of databases of varying levels of complexity and business criticality.
Responsibilities would include: Building the DB Service function in Core Tech and IT: hiring, training and managing a team of database administrators, database developers and leads. Managing a team of 5-10 to ensure excellent 24x7 service for a wide array of databases required by a complex portfolio of applications and services. Defining, implementing and aggressively enforcing SLAs and service management best practices Interfacing with a wide variety of functions throughout the technology and business landscape Managing vendors, consultant resources to augment staffing if required Overseeing programs with multiple project streams for build activities Position Requirements: We are looking for a person who: Has 10+ years of experience in database development and support, ideally in an enterprise environment with a focus on providing common technology service to multiple departments. Has 5+ years experience managing or leading a team in database management, support and administration. Experience standing up a shared service platform in a highly multi-departmental and matrixed organization; can communicate clearly with a wide variety of people and functions. Experience in an enterprise technology environment; familiar with service-model standards and practices, designing and adhering to the service levels Experience managing consulting resources and vendors. Thrives in a fast-paced, challenging environment; processes information quickly; and has a penchant for creative problem solving Values truth and excellence at all costs, and is comfortable giving and receiving direct feedback
Preferred candidates would also meet the following criteria: Hands-on experience with the Microsoft SQL Server RDBMS technology in addition to infrastructure technology (e.g., servers, network, storage etc) Experience designing enterprise RDBMS server architecture with aspects of high availability, disaster recovery, performance and security management etc.
Degree in Computer Science or Engineering from one of the nation’s top universities
