Executive Job Description
"Enhancing the quality of people’s lives: a place where customers love to shop and colleagues love to work."

Our client, Raley’s Family of Fine Stores (www.raleys.com), is seeking a Brand & Consumer Advocate Director. Raley’s was founded in 1935 by Tom Raley, whose life was an authentic American success story. Since then, Raley’s has grown to 118 stores in northern California and 14 in Nevada, and includes Bel Air Markets, Nob Hill Foods and Food Source warehouses. Today, Tom Raley's family, the executive team and approximately 15,000 colleagues carry his legacy into a bright new era. Raley’s is the eighth largest private company in California with approximately $3.3 billion in annual sales. Nationally known for their unprecedented meats, produce and world class service, Raley’s pioneering history includes having the “first drive-in market,” “first self-service meat counter”, the first “Superstore”, and today operates the cleanest burning Class 8 Diesel Truck Fleet in the world. Highly regarded and active in the communities they serve, Raley’s has been three times voted the “Number One” supermarket chain in the nation by a leading national consumer magazine.

The Marketing Department is undergoing an exciting evolution in-line with the rapidly changing supermarket industry. Under the leadership of the first-ever Chief Marketing Officer, Raley’s is focused on a new vision of the all-important relationship with their customers. Customer loyalty and customer care is paramount at the company. The Marketing Department is charged with strengthening the linkage between company revenues and the key areas of customer care, marketing, and branding. Using a dynamic mix of the latest technologies and marketing/branding strategies, plus a hint of traditional methods, the Marketing Department is leading the way to enhance the customer experience.

The Brand & Consumer Advocate Director plans, directs and oversees the development and implementation of marketing plans, brand strategy, customer relationship management and consumer insight to create interest, demand, loyalty and brand recognition for Raley’s. The Brand & Consumer Advocate Director reports to the Chief Marketing Officer.

Expected first year outcomes for the Brand & Consumer Advocate Director include:

In the first 60 days:
• Acting as the “second chair” to the Chief Marketing Officer, help design, and then drive the development of the company’s new marketing plan and the new brand strategy.

In the first 90 days:
• Assist in the implementation and launch of the Phase I Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system.

In the first 120 days:
• Meet with business leaders to understand the company vision and industry; collect data on the understanding and acceptance of the role that the Marketing Department has historically had in the company, and establish baseline metrics.

• From the information gathered from meeting with business leaders, create a “Marketing Department Action Plan” to educate employees on where the department is headed. The plan will include how to routinely instill marketing philosophies, tools and discipline throughout the organization to improve the understanding and acceptance of the impact that marketing has on increasing sales and customer loyalty.

Within the first 180 days:
• Implement the Marketing Department Action Plan and ensure department employees have key liaison and communication roles.

By the end of the year:
• To be seen as a high-performing, innovative key member of the Marketing Department, and a valued, collaborative member of the Raleys’ management team.

Our client believes the following competencies are required to effectively create the first year outcomes: eight to ten years (or more) of successful experience (five in a management capacity) in managing an innovative, performance-driven marketing department or division and upgrading outdated practices to support the business; strong background in Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems required, from a “pedigree” consumer company; consumer brand marketing experience required; retail experience required; a proven track record of leading marketing teams to produce results in a transformational manner; a business person whose expertise and passion is marketing and branding; a problem solver who makes decisions based on data and facts; demonstrated history of partnering with peers to make things happen; outstanding influence and communication skills; a history of successfully integrating/leveraging marketing with the business; experience in working with senior or executive management teams; a graduate degree in business or marketing is preferred; and history of continuous professional education and professional development.

Our client is offering an exceptional opportunity to work in an expanding industry with an organization of excellence. The compensation package includes a competitive base salary, an annual and long term incentive plan plus excellent benefits. The position is located at Raley’s Corporate Headquarter (called The Support Center) in Sacramento, California, a region long-known for its outstanding quality of life. Sacramento has been cited as one of the five “most livable” regions in America. Pre-screened, selected candidates will be invited to interview with the search committee the first week of March, 2010, with second interviews the same week.

For confidential consideration, at your earliest convenience and no later than February 8, 2010, please email your chronological resume and compensation expectations to:
