Executive Job Description
The College

Founded in 1851, the College is a private, selective, coeducational, residential, undergraduate institution with a curriculum based on the liberal arts with an emphasis on developmental experience. It has been recently recognized as the 39th best college in the nation by Forbes Magazine. The current student population of 1080 is nearly evenly split between men and women who represent 28 states and 65 foreign countries. Small by design, with a student/faculty ratio of 14:1, the college encourages close personal interactions between faculty and students, providing one of the cornerstones of excellence in teaching and learning.

It is located in a pleasant community of 13,000 residents, just off an Interstate Highway, within 25 to 100 miles of four much larger cities, including the State Capital.

Responsibilities:

The college’s most immediate and pressing need is to firmly establish its financial priorities, to effectively plan, execute and live within its annual operating budget, and to accurately and systematically anticipate and plan for its short and long range financial needs.
The position of Director-Budgeting & Financial Controls reports to the Vice President for Business & Finance (VPB/CFO) and is considered the senior financial management position within the Business Office of the college. Its fundamental role is a resource to help each department leader and cabinet member in optimizing the college’s performance and to ensure the integrity of all the fiscal processes employed!

Working in collaboration with the VPB/CFO, the board, and other senior leaders on campus, the new Director will play a pivotal role in establishing, reviewing and maintaining the budget models going forward to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the short and long range financial plans the college needs to successfully meet its fiscal priorities and move its agenda forward.

The Director–Budgeting and Financial Controls, under the general direction of the VPB/CFO:

• directs the development of multi-year financial planning, forecasting and modeling
• develops and implements systems, policies, and procedures for the annual budgeting process
• establishes financial controls that will assure budgetary correctness and compliance in all financial planning;
• generally assists the VPB/CFO with financial analysis and oversight of financial issues.

Requirements:

PREFERRED CANDIDATE PROFILE

In broadest terms, an individual best qualified as a candidate for this position will be a mature professional with upwards of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, budgeting and financial analysis. Experience with budgeting and finance in a college or non-profit environment is preferred. He/she will have demonstrated an ability to work effectively with all functional areas of an enterprise and a capability to work with limited direction and supervision.

It is an essential requirement that the candidates have the ability to function in a collaborative, communal feedback-rich, environment. They must have constructive and positive interpersonal skills and be compatible with colleagues

It is preferred that candidates will have career experience gained largely in well regarded and successful institutions, organizations and enterprises The depth, breadth and quality of experience should be an appropriate foundation for succession to positions of higher responsibility.

Prior association with a private, independent institution of higher learning will provide valuable awareness of the fiduciary and revenue vagaries unique to educational entities.


Education & Professional Credentials

It is expected that, at a minimum, candidates will have an undergraduate degree, BS or BA, preferably in business, economics, finance, or accounting. Additionally, an advanced degree will be desirable, (MBA preferred).

CPA (or equivalent business experience) will be desirable.
