The Director of Innovation is a customer facing position that leads a small team of engineers and reports to the President. Scope and Responsibilities • The Director of Innovation is an officer of the company and a member of its executive committee. The primary responsibility of this position is to ensure the growth and profitability of the company as a whole. • The Director of Innovation is responsible for developing and managing the engineering department, and will be measured based on performance against both short term and long term goals. Idea generation and creativity in this position are a must, as are the ability to work with deadlines, manage and complete projects through commercialization.
Specific Duties • Setting strategic objectives relating to sales of the company’s products into target markets and the roll-out of appropriate new products. Formulating the associated action plan, including financial targets, project time schedule and resource allocation. • Management of the R&D process extending from concept development through to product launch. The product launch is complete only when the products are fully manufacturable and free of design flaws, vendors for components have been selected and qualified, costs are calculated and optimized, and product technical literature is complete. • Responsible for sustaining engineering. Ensuring that existing products incorporate changes enhancing quality, manufacturability, product features, and new market standards. • The primary emphasis for the Director of Innovation’s day-to-day work lies on project management, both for R&D projects and for major applications projects. This entails not just the project planning, but also daily interventions with all parties involved in the execution to ensure that projects remains on track.
Qualifications • B.S. in Microelectronics or Electronics Engineering. Advanced degrees such as an M.B.A. or a Masters degree in engineering are a plus. Formal classes in marketing related activities is desirable, but not required. • Minimum of eight years experience in design engineering / research & development. • Management experience required: personnel responsibility, setting and working towards financial targets. The position will lead a team of 5 direct reports. • Strong project management experience. Familiarity with project management tools (e.g. Microsoft Project) required. • Familiarity with analytical instruments used in process control, clinical diagnostics, chemical research, biotechnology and/or environmental testing would be an extra bonus. • Creative and self-motivated. Able to influence and lead people.
Management style & personality We seek a highly motivated individual with strong desire to lead a small, knowledgable and experienced engineering group. The essence of the position is to lead by example, rather than by intense management and iterative coaching. NO micro-managers or desk-jockeys. It is important that this individual have strong organizational skills and a systematic approach to engineering/project management.
Compensation A competitive compensation package is offered for this position. The compensation package consist of a competitive base salary; depending upon experience, executive bonus, which is based on growth of profitability can be up to 100% of base salary – average bonus is in the 20-40% range, 401(k), profit sharing, medical, dental and other benefits.
