REPORTING TO: Illinois Board of Admissions to the Bar
LOCATION: Springfield, Illinois
THE ORGANIZATION: The organization, an appointed body of the Supreme Court of the State of Illinois, is responsible for all aspects of the bar admission process including the twice yearly administration of bar examinations, applications for admission on motion and the overseeing of committees on character and fitness. The staff of the Board numbers approximately 20 persons; this position reports to the seven-member Board which is appointed by the Supreme Court of Illinois. THE POSITION: This is an existing position open due to the pending retirement of the incumbent. The position is responsible for all operational activities of this agency. This position is the leader for the group that has responsibility for the complete administration of the bar admission process in Illinois including applications from those who are requesting admission in Illinois by transfer from other jurisdictions. This is a “working manager” position where the incumbent is expected to interact directly with applicants when appropriate as well as to oversee the hiring, training, support and performance evaluations of the subordinate work force. The subordinates are typically of long tenure with the organization averaging 10-12 years’ service.
BUSINESS EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The successful executive ideally will have 10 or more years of relevant career experience including at least 5 years as a practicing attorney and/or a legal administrator such as a law firm executive director. Superior verbal and written communication skills are required as are knowledge, experience and comfort in working with basic computer applications such as word processing and the Internet. Preference will be given to candidates with administrative experience in Bar related activities, including supervision of others for program management. Applicants must be licensed to practice law in Illinois or currently possess the credentials to become licensed.
COMPENSATION: Competitive, including participation in excellent health benefit plans as well as a tax deferred, non-contributory savings plan. Reasonable but limited relocation reimbursement is available to the successful candidate if needed.
TRAVEL: Travel, typically of short duration and which will sometimes include domestic (generally within the State) air travel, is expected in this position. On the average over a year, travel may approximate 15%.
RELOCATION: The successful candidate will be expected to live in Springfield, Illinois. Reasonable, limited relocation assistance is available.
